Just adjacent to Saint-Emilion is the region of Pomerol. Unlike Saint-Emilion, it is not a pretty village, but a collection of fields of just 730 hectares, and there is no village or centre to the appellation. The land is valuable for the vines, and no space is given over to grand chateaux as in other areas. Farms are tiny - averaging between 5 and 10 hectares, and totally the area produces only about 50,000 bottles of wine a year.As with Saint Emilion, the vines are predominantly Merlot due to the prevailing soil and climate conditions. We work with Jean-Michel Moueix whose vines reflect this, however he also grows a small quantity of Cabernet Sauvignon which add an interesting twist to the traditional Pomerol taste. Clos Beauregard is to be found just next door to Jean-Michel's Saint-Emilion property Chateau La Tour du Pin Figeac. Similarly it is a small property of just about 5 hectares, and benefits from soil consisting of 'old' sand and iron-stone. |
