The Moueix vineyards
In
1905, Antoine Moueix established the Maison Moueix. Five generations
of the Moueix family have followed him, enhancing the quality and adding
to the size and range of the vines over time. In 1991, Jean-Michel took
over ownership and today is still managing the vineyards. He is in charge
of a 20 hectare estate with 6 celebrated vineyards in Saint-Emilion and
Pomerol. He is assisted by his son, Francois, who will one day take up
the reins and continue the family tradition.
The balance of a Jean-Michel
Moueix wine is achieved through the subtle alliance between the sand
and the gravel terroir and two grape varieties: Merlot, which gives the wine colour, suppleness and
roundness and develops its flavours relatively quickly.
Cabernet Franc, highly valued for its aging ability
and the finesse of its aromas.
The Moueix traditional production methods
There
are particular stages relating to the cultivation of the vine:
- foliage is removed to allow the sun to reach the grapes and promote
ripeness and flavour
- some of the grapes are removed during the vendanges vertes or pre-harvest
to ensure a balanced final harvest
- all the grapes are picked by hand, carefully placed in crates, and
then selected to extract the best fruit from the vineyards
- the wine is fermented in vats and then matured in casks for 12 to
18 months depending on the year
- to ensure optimum conditions for aging, one third of the barrels
is renewed each year

Once the wine has completed its maturing process in the oak barrels,
it is bottled and stored in the cellars. Before shipping the bottles
are washed, dried, capsuled, labeled and packed in cartons or wooden
cases.
