Bergerac's vineyards lie either side of the Dordogne and its annual production is about 10% that of Bordeaux. They extend eastwards from St. Emilion and Côtes de Castillon and consist of 12 appellations. The landscape is rolling - a high proportion of arable land producing tobacco, maize, sweet grapes and cereals. The town of Bergerac is a thriving centre trading in the agricultural produce of the region. Indeed Bergerac has long been a wine-producing region. During the English occupation, wines were exempt of tax in order to assist exports to England. As early as the 14th Century, barrels of Bergerac wine were unusual in that they carried a distinguishing mark of a griffin and a tower, to assist in their recognition, and hence their special duty arrangements. The area's wines are becoming increasingly popular and as well as reds and dry whites, there is also the excellent, highly-reputed Monbazillac sweet white to be savoured. We work with 2 family-owned vineyards - Chateau la Gamarde and Chateau le Clou - which produce excellent quality Bergerac wines as well as superb Monbazillac sweet white wines. |
