Chateau le Temple - a place of legendsChateau le Temple has a long and distinguished history. It begins 700 years ago at the time of the Knights Templar, when the order built a hospital. Originally called the Chateau of the Temple-de-Tourteyron, the hospital was built to cater and care for pilgrims on the route from around Saintonge, in the north, to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle, on the southern side of the Gironde. Although the original hospital disappeared when the Knights Templar order was brutally suppressed in the early 14th century, ruins and remnants can still be found in what is now Chateau le Temple. Evidence of the brutal suppression was witnessed by the current owner of the château, Denis Bergey, a few years ago, when he found a shallow grave of human bones, buried about half a metre below the surface, just adjacent to his château. To all intents and purposes this was a shallow grave of Knights of the order, who judging by the ancient chain and lock also discovered, had been brutally imprisoned prior to meeting their end. |
