France Uncorked Chateau la Gamarde

Chateau la Gamarde

Chateau la Gamarde receptionChateau la Gamarde comprises about 32 hectares. Situated on the typical clay-chalky soil of the area, the following grapes are cultivated:

  • 11.5 hectares of Merlot (55%) and Cabernet (45%), situated on the plains of the Pomport area and used for the Bergerac reds
  • 20.5 hectares of Semillon (75%), Muscadelle (20%) and Sauvignon (5%), situated on the slopes of Pomport and used for the Bergerac dry white wines and the Monbazillac sweet wines

Château la Gamarde specializes in the Monbazillac sweet white wine.

All wines are 'Appellation d'Origine Controllée', and are bottled at the château, having been aged in vats. They are generally rich in colour and have a powerful, fruity bouquet which ages well.

SunflowersGreat care and attention is paid to the vines. They are pruned with electric secateurs to give a cleaner cut and avoid bruising.

In alternate years the 'cultivation' method is used for keeping the weeds under control. The ground under the vines is earthed down in spring, and then at the end of summer prior to harvesting, the ground is earthed up. The following year, bio-degradable weedkillers are used, and the final weeding is done in autumn.

Organic fertilizers are used to protect the vineyards and the environment. Chemical usage is kept to a bare minimum.
