Chateau Ferran

The Ferrans

Chateau FerranAlain and Béatrice Ferran took over Chateau Ferran in 1976. Since then they have been involved in a continuous selection and monitoring process; getting to know the vines, and the terroir, and honing and refining replanting and grafting techniques.

Six years ago, Alain's passion for nature and the environment was instrumental in their decision to begin the process of changing to organic farming. In 2004, after a lengthy transition period from traditional to natural production, they received their "AB" ("Agriculture Biologique") accreditation, which meant the wine they produced was officially 'organic', (although some of their stock comes from the 'transition' period, and is designated as wine 'en conversion').

less intensive farmingAlain is passionate about trying to preserve the natural balance of the environment, hence his return to less intensive farming practice, more in keeping with the way nature intended.

The concentrated flavours of his wines are evidence that these more 'natural' methods benefit not only nature, but his produce as well.

The Property

Chateau Ferran is located in the Entre-Deux-Mers appellation, near Cadillac, in a small area called "Haut Benauge".

VineyardsIt comprises 20 hectares, about three quarters of which is laid to red grapes (Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon), whilst the rest is white (Sauvignon, Semillon and Muscadelle).

Each parcel of grapes has its own different characteristics, depending on whether it has come from clay or chalk soil (or Boulbène in the case of Semillon), and is vinified separately to maintain these individualities.

The average age of the vines is 20 years.
