Château de Fitère
is located at Cannet, not far from the town of Riscle in the north of
the region. The owner is Monsieur René Castets whose family have
managed the vines since the 18th century. The 19th Century château,
dating from the 19th Century, is to be found in an idyllic location,
perched high on the sunny vine slopes, with a panoramic view and
surrounded by flowers, oaks and palm trees. René Castets has developed
what he calls 'new style' Madiran, or 'Fitère Madiran', which
judiciously marries the full-bodied nature of the Tannât grape,
with the subtle complexities of the local 'terroir'.
René is proud to have preserved some 100 year old vines, planted
by his grandfather, Marius Fitère. In fact the top-of-the-range
Chateau de Fitère wine, 'Vieilles Vignes', made each year with
grapes from the old vines, pays homage to his grand-father.
René's
success at Château de Fitère is reflected in the rapid growth
from a 23 hectare estate to approximately 100 hectares today. René produces
superb Madiran wines, as well as the sweet Pacherenc du Vic Bihl and
a Côtes de Gascogne.
