Domaine Castel Sablons
Castel Sablons' vineyards are located not far from the famous
town of Cognac, in the 'Fins Bois' region. The distillery
is called 'Le Bourg' and is based in a small village - Saint-Maigrin
- near Archiac. The vineyards extend to about 6 hectares of Ugni Blanc
grapes.
The family produces a range of top quality 'Fins Bois' and 'Petite
Champagne' cognacs as well as Pineaux des Charentes, specially
prepared cuisine products, and its famous 'Brûlot Charentais'.
Brûlot Charentais is a speciality which has been enjoyed by the
locals for three centuries.
Historically, many people used to take a hot drink or infusion, before
going to bed. In the Cognac area, the main tipple was wine topped off
with burning alcohol.
For special occasions - baptisms, communions, marriages, birthdays,
Christmas, Easter, the Charentais wine farmers would add a slug of neat
Cognac, straight from the cask, to their coffee. This Cognac, strong
in alcohol, was set alight, reducing its strength and producing striking,
festive blue flames. This was a real luxury, however, as although they
could all afford the cognac, the coffee was a rare treat.
The term 'Brûlot Charentais' was coined, and several
years ago the Roux family started producing a Brûlot
Charentais 'coffret', in order to share the experience
with people outside the area.
